Steve Gladstone Yale rowing coach and maybe the best rowing coach in America. At least that's what Frank Cunningham and Charley McIntyre thought in 1993 when Steve coached at Cal. I couldn't find much about how Steve coached - why he was so successful. But Don Costello, who rowed at Cal, said Steve was quiet and coached by being positive with his rowers. Don also said they did a lot of rowing with feet out of the strchers, fast out of bow and a slow run up to the next catch to take advantage of that "free speed".

That's evident in the 2015 race at Henley in which Yale beat the University of Washington by more than a length rowing at a slower rate. And also in the Yale-Harvard Race, 2015.
